WASHINGTON (AP) — A Senate committee has voted to issue a subpoena as part of its investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden’s son, a move that met immediate opposition from Democrats who said the panel should be focused on overseeing the federal response to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on Wednesday voted 8-6 to subpoena Blue Star Strategies, a lobbying firm that was a consultant to Burisma, a gas company in Ukraine that paid Hunter Biden to serve as a board member.
Senator Rand Paul said he expected the subpoena he voted for on Wednesday to yield emails from Blue Star Strategies, a lobbying firm that represented Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy company for which Hunter Biden worked.
President Trump has openly encouraged the Senate’s investigation, and last year he was impeached by the House on charges that he inappropriately pressured Ukraine’s president to announce an investigation into the Bidens over Hunter Biden’s work for Burisma. The president was later acquitted by the Senate.
Democrats on the committee Wednesday were critical of the vote, with Sen.Maggie Hassan, (D-N.H.), calling it “a charade that would be silly if it were not so insidious,” according to NPR.
